Frequently Asked Questions
What is the STAR Puppy Training Method?
The STAR Puppy Training Method is a comprehensive, structured approach designed to guide young puppies and their owners through the vital learning phase of the canine development journey. STAR stands for Socialization, Training, Activity, and Responsibility, emphasizing a well-rounded foundation for puppies beginning at 8 weeks old. This method not only enhances the bonding experience between the puppy and owner but also sets the stage for a well-behaved dog that thrives in any situation.
What is the Canine Good Citizen (CGC) Program?
The CGC Program is built around a series of 10 test items that evaluate a dog's behavior and temperament in different situations. These tests assess a dog’s ability to handle common circumstances, including walking on a loose leash, sitting politely for petting, and greeting other dogs in a friendly manner. Additionally, the tests evaluate the dog’s response to distractions, which is crucial for ensuring a well-rounded companion.
At Smart Pups Nashville, we utilize the CGC methods to reduce behavioral problems, increases public acceptance of dogs, and enhances the overall image of the canine community.
My dog already has bad habits. Is it too late to start training?
Absolutely not! Believe it or not, it is possible to reverse bad habits and teach a dog new tricks. Whether your dog needs help with leash training, potty training, manners and polite behavior around people – now is the time to start working with him.
Other than the age requirements (12 weeks to 3 years), what else is required of my pup before starting training?
All puppies must be up-to-date on vaccinations and you must have proof of vaccination submitted prior to start date of any services/programs.
If your pup is 10 weeks to 15 weeks of age, he/she must have received at least #2 Distemper/Parvo vaccines as well as the Bordetella vaccine.
If your pup is 16 weeks or older, he/she must have received #3-4 Distemper/Parvo vaccines, Bordetella +/- #2 Leptospirosis vaccines as well as their Rabies 1 year vaccines.
Further requirements include being up-to-date on both flea/tick and heartworm preventions.
Do you use shock collars or choke collars?
No, our approach is humane, pain and fear-free. Most often, fear, pain and punishment make things worse. Consistent, clear communication and positive reinforcement are vital to building a trusting, healthy relationship between you and your dog.
A variety of safe/humane dog gear can be used for successful training and may be used during the services depending on what works for your dog.
How long is the Puppy Day Board-and-Train Program? What’s the difference between day board-and-train and overnight board-and-train?
The Overnight Board-and-Train Program at Smart Pups Nashville spans over two weeks (10 days total, M-F). During this intensive period, your pup receives structured training and socialization while in a safe and stimulating environment. Within the board-and-train program are two options: Day Board-and-Train vs. Overnight Board-and-Train.
Day Board-and-Train: Our expert trainers work diligently with your pup on a weekday of your choosing, Monday - Friday, 8:00am - 5:00pm, to establish solid foundational skills, ensuring that your puppy becomes a well-behaved and confident companion. For this program, you must be able to drop off and pick up your own dog each day.
The advantage of day boarding is that your puppy gets the attention he/she needs without being away from you for entire weeks at a time. We all know puppies don’t stay small forever and that puppy time with owners is priceless!
Overnight Board-and-Train: Dogs stay with the trainer day and night for a total of 10 days. In between each week, you will take your pup home to practice what they have learned and give feedback to help set the second week up for success, honing in on more specifics. This setup enables a deeper dive into behavioral training. Each day builds on the previous one, making it easier for your puppy to learn. The constant presence of trainers helps solidify learning, allowing for immediate correction and reinforcement. Additionally, the overnight aspect means your dog can adapt to their training environment and work on their separation anxiety, if applicable.
There are many advantages of overnight boarding. It provides a more consistent routine that enhances the puppy learning experience. It is also the perfect solution for busy pet owners who may struggle to juggle their busy schedules without sacrificing their puppy’s development.
How long is each one-on-one lesson?
Each one-on-one lesson lasts 90 minutes. This time is designed to ensure that your puppy stays focused and you have the opportunity to engage fully. More sessions lead to stronger bonds and better results; hence why lessons are only offered as packages.
How do you track my puppy’s progress during training?
At Smart Pups Nashville, tracking your puppy’s progress during training is a priority. We utilize a multi-faceted approach to ensure every pup is on the path to success.
First, we keep detailed training logs for each session, recording what skills were practiced, the puppy’s responses, and any notable behaviors. This allows us to identify strengths and areas needing improvement.
Second, we implement regular assessments. These evaluations are designed to measure your puppy’s mastery of commands and applicable social behaviors. Feedback from these assessments guides our training strategies, allowing us to adapt as needed.
Third, we encourage open communication between trainers and puppy owners. You’ll receive progress reports after each session, detailing achievements, challenges, and recommendations for practice at home.
Lastly, we celebrate milestones, big and small. Recognizing achievements fosters motivation and builds a strong bond between you and your puppy. With this comprehensive approach, we ensure your puppy's training journey is transparent, effective, and rewarding.
How do I know if Smart Pups Nashville training is the right fit for my puppy?
When considering if Smart Pups Nashville training is the right fit for your puppy, the following key factors are taken into consideration:
1. Puppy Age and Temperament: Our programs are designed for dogs aged 12 weeks to 3 years. If your pup is within this age range and exhibits a curious, energetic, or playful demeanor, they will thrive in our environment.
We may assist with fearful, anxious and reactive dogs! However, if your dog displays any signs of aggression towards people or other dogs we ask that you seek help with a k-9 behavioral specialist for proper evaluation and training.
2. Training Goals: Clearly define your training goals. Whether you want basic obedience, socialization skills, or assistance with training your own pup, Smart Pups Nashville tailors our approach to meet your specific needs.
3. Training Style: We use positive reinforcement techniques that cultivate a strong bond between you and your puppy. If you appreciate an encouraging, reward-based method over punitive measures, you’ll find our training philosophy aligns perfectly with yours.
4. Commitment Level: Training requires consistency and dedication. Evaluate your availability to commit to scheduled sessions and practice at home vs. the board-and-train programs.
5. Socialization Opportunities: Smart Pups Nashville emphasizes socialization with older dogs and/or other puppies as well as new people. If you’re looking for a program that prioritizes creating a well-rounded companion, our training sessions provide invaluable interaction.
